Of course, we cannot talk about the thermal comfort when entering the vehicular cabin in extreme conditions (very hot sunny days or cold winter days) but the aim is to reach comfortable conditions as soon as possible and offer as comfortable environments as we can, with consideration of energy consumption, especially in EV

transportation vehicles. From the point of thermal comfort, it is important to take into consideration all the environmental parameters such as air temperature, humidity, radiation (temperature of windows, heated seats etc.), air speed (from HVAC systems) etc. as they can have a huge impact on the overall comfort. Principle of equivalent temperature is often used in such inhomogeneous conditions. Thermal manikin is a perfect tool for testing and optimizing thermal comfort in transportation vehicles, as it simulates the human body well and offers precise and repeatable data.

Several standards rely on the use of a thermal manikin for evaluating the thermal comfort of vehicle cabins. Key standards include:

  • SAE J826 Devices for Use in Defining and Measuring Vehicle Seating Accommodation
    Although this standard is primarily focused on seating position, it can be adapted for thermal comfort testing using a thermal manikin in automotive applications
  • SAE J2234 Equivalent Temperature – Truck and Bus
    This document focuses on the definition of equivalent temperature, describing how it could be used to evaluate performance of HVAC in vehicular cabins and describes how it can be measured
  • ISO 14505-2 Ergonomics of the thermal environment — Evaluation of thermal environments in vehicles
    This standard specifically focuses on the evaluation of thermal comfort inside vehicles, often using thermal manikins to simulate human occupants
