Lunge system for Thermal Manikin 2004

The respirator system consists of a pump for inhaling, a pump for exhaling and a controller.

PC connection

The controller is connected to the PC on the same RS 485 line as the Thermal manikin. When the lung is connected, the software will automatically find it. Note, that if the lung was not connected last time, the manikin was used, it is necessary to run set-up - rescan to find it.

The two pumps on - times and intervals are controlled individually from pc.

Pump control and connection

The air volume is controlled from the front of the controller. The scale is 0 to 100 % of the mains voltage and is not linearly proportional to flow rate. The outputs must be used for the original pumps only.

Gas valve (optional)

Exhale pump is equipped with a valve for tracer gas. The valve is active synchronic with the pump and indicated with red light from the valve switch on the pump. When the valve is not active, the gas is passing through the valve to outlet tube which must be let out to a place, where it does not interfere with the measurements.

This is done in order to obtain a constant pressure in the tracer gas system and tubes. When active, the valve passes the gas to the inlet of the exhale pump, where it is mixed with air. The valve is connected to the valve output on the controller.

The valve output must be used for the original gas valve only.

Inhale pump

Air for analysing is taken from a T - connector at the output of the inhale pump. The other side of the connector is connected to a tube long enough to make sure, the analyser can not suck fresh air in backwards from the end of the tube, in case the analyser is sampling at a moment when the pump is not running.

Exhale heater (optional)

The controller contains a heating system for the exhale air. The temperature is controlled and displayed on the pc. The censor and heating element are connected on the rear of the controller.

Principal plane and angles of exhalation flow from nose:

Comments: Principal vertical axis through manikin is defined by the center of a horisontal "slice" at waist and neck level. Second axis of principal plane is "forward" according to the manikin. The second plane of interest is perpendicular to the first plane. In the picture, this would correspond to an approximately horisontal plane. Exhalation flows through nostrils should have an intervening angle of 30°, symmetrically around the vertical plane, and they should have an inclination of 45° below the horisontal plane. The volumetric flow rate should be equal through the two nostrils.

Exhalation through the mouth should be horisontal, i.e. be perpendicular to the principal axis and lie in the principal plane.
